A FEW WORDS FROM THE ARTIST:   "I became interested in painting this series of paintings after seeing the movie "Girl with a Pearl Earring" about the life of the dutch painter Vermeer. The figure has always been my main interest in art, both in painting and sculpting. Bringing the human spirit to life on the canvas I find a fascinating experience. Breathing life into a blank canvas with the help of paint and a few brushes is magical. When I feel like the figure exist in her own world reaching into my world I feel content and can say it's finished.

A TOKEN OF LOVE:  When looking at a portrait that is well painted it can take me into another realm, time vanishes. There are no words spoken yet I can feel the presence of that flame of life. When starting the first Girl with a Pearl Earring I didn't think to paint more than one but I now am working on the fourth one. All are different in some way, angles, size, color of the eyes, expression, lighting. Pearls are all by themselves so beautiful in their simplicity. The color in the surroundings will reflect gently in the white of the pearl. My mother gave me pearl ring she had been given by my father and my grandmother gave me her pearl neck less given to her by my grandfather. This link from female to female, generation to generation has a special meaning. And the male adorning his beloved with a gift of pearls. The pearl is a symbol of love. Diver's have fetched some of those pearls from the bottom of the ocean. And it all starts with a grain of sand. It's a timeless concept to me, a girl with a pearl earring. It has no end in sight. Women will continue to receive pearls as a token of love."   Vala Ola
